What Kind Of Web Surfer Are You?

June 10th, 2010

Your surfing habits say a lot about you. Do you ever linger on a site long enough to click on the ads that support that site? Or do you hurry off and forget what you saw and where you saw it. Do you take time to leave a comment? To a blog poster leaving a comment is important but not as important as supporting his or her advertisers. I get a lot of comments but rarely any follow through to see what the offers are all about. Did you know that as a blogger you can not visit the links on your own site? You are completely in the dark about what those ads contain and whether or not they are pertinent to you posts.

Without visitors to comment on the content the blogger has no way to know if he is servicing his readers.

If you want to help out a blogger, you can do so by visiting his or her advertisers and then returning to leave a comment or a guest post about the topic. This is more valuable than saying how nice the articles are or how much you enjoyed the post. Doing something of substance helps all the readers. From personal experience there are teams of people behind the ads running on blogs. They work hard at making a small phrase or a couple of words grab your attention. If you are not rewarding them with a visit, then you are a surfer without merit and to the blogger it was like you were never there.

How To Add Tags and Categories After The Fact

May 30th, 2010

Have you ever gotten so deep into working on a project that your thoughts just begin to run together? Or how about all the new information blending into a mass of confusion? I was putting together an article to submit and got stalled on keywords, categories and tags. So stupid, but it happened. I did a quick Google search of those three words and found some very useful information. Click here to read how to add tags and categories after the fact. Very helpful…. the info came from Word Press dot com not Word Press dot org.

Categories and tags apply only to blog posts and if the information I read at the above link was correct, they apply only to Wordpress. Keywords of course apply to everything you write if you are hoping to get traffic from the information you provide.

Internet Marketing For Your Clawson Business

May 19th, 2010

Don’t let this happen to you. If you are Clawson business, you have a website, and are not on the first page of the search results, something is wrong. You need to find out what it is and fix it. (See the link to the free report below)

Everyday you miss being in the top few you are losing opportunity. Internet marketing your business to the residents living around Clawson, Michigan is the absolute best way to spend your advertising dollars. Residents wanting to live in a prosperous vibrant community are just waiting for your invitation. Reaching them via the Internet is the surest way to generate interest from cash-in-hand buyers, lower your costs of operation and prosper as a result.

At a very basic level this is how advertising / marketing for local businesses works:

Local residents need certain services and businesses locate in the community hoping to draw those local purchases.

Part of the expense in drawing in those local residents is your advertising which informs everyone of the goods, services and unique reason to do business with you, their local merchant (ie:proximity, expertise, extraordinary service, etc)

Your advertising budget comes from one of two places: in the beginning it comes from the business owners pocket as part of the investment in the business. As the the business progresses the advertising budget is part of the price of everything the business sells.

The different forms of advertising all have different costs, with some of them being extremely expensive for what results a business owner gets in return.

Some of the expensive types of advertising that businesses use are signs on the front of their building for a retail store; signs on the side of a truck; yellow page ads; direct mailers like ValPak; weekly newspaper. A yellow page ad is very expensive and with all the different phone service providers how does a resident choose what phone book to look in? Direct mail is very expensive because it goes to every home and not every home needs an ad about a new furnace. Most people call this junk mail. Newspapers ads are expensive and are thrown in the trash by the end of day.

For a business, there is no end to the ways to spend money attracting new customers. Until recently the yellow page ad , the direct mail piece and the newspaper were the most effective, but were re-occurring expenses that went on and on without any internet competition. This expense, passed along to consumers as part of their purchase price meant prices rarely went down.

But Did You Know?

With the dawn of the internet and the familiarity consumers have with searching using Google, it is possible for a savvy business person who understands how it works to capture their customers loyalty and actually lower their costs. It is easy to keep a customer loyal when prices remain stable over a long period of time. I’ll post a little more about this another day.

The Death Of A (your) Salesman

May 18th, 2010

One of the questions I recently read online at Linked In, was obviously written by someone in sales frustrated by potential customers lack of interest in hearing his message. It read: “If someone could get a better quality product that is less expensive why would they avoid talking with someone about it?” One of the most probable honest answers is that no one ever really enjoyed sitting through a sales pitch and dealing with the numerous follow up attempts made by the salesperson delivering the pitch. Another probable answer is why would someone subject himself or herself to an unsolicited time zapper if they didn’t have to, when all that is needed to find a supplier is a millisecond Google search.

The back-story and how it changed my method of selling

After the housing boom ended and tightening credit rippled through the mainstream supply base, I believed, the time was right to market for a financially solvent, low cost manufacturer. I thought that presenting a potential supplier who carried no debt and paid its bills on time wasn’t a hard sell, but rather like dropping off a Christmas gift. Just delivering that message ought to bring in tons of opportunities. So, off I went on a concentrated sales effort seeking new business for a plastic injection molder; targeting companies who outsource molding, covering four states, using the tried and true Brian Tracy method of selling.

To my surprise, just a few calls set the script for the entire road trip. I encountered extremely polite people: most often an engineer, manager, or sales person, answering the main phone line due to cutbacks in their office. After my brief introduction, and their reassurance they were always looking for good suppliers, the water turned murky. The first question they always asked was “Do you have a website?” Of course, we did and I gladly directed them to it. But how could such a simple question, wreak such havoc?

What I found out challenged my lifetime of experience and changed my future course

The financial crisis and global economy removed a lot of ordinary expenses from a products price; such things as a salary for a receptionist in the lobby and a staff to review a new supplier. Due to cutbacks, the buyer now wears several hats combining his/her workload with that previously done by their boss and other staff. No longer is there a personal introduction of your company and it’s glossy brochure. Or even an appointment to deliver it. There is no time in their routine. The selection of a new vendor is now the result of a Google search and a printout of the first page of search results.

Although the people in charge of the buying process now, are more than ever willing to consider a new supplier, the decision is instant once they visit your website. The judging is now done after a mouse click tour through the story told by the links on your site. The website must present excellence. Why customers must choose you has to grab their attention. It’s the one and only chance to sell. Worse, you’ve only got ten to fifteen seconds to set the hook. The “new” customer considers your potential quickly and decisively. If your unique offer is not included in that first few seconds, it is the kiss of death.

For the next year, knowing how to master this one task occupied my every thought.

It became clear; future prosperity for any business will only come through Internet marketing. Any company hoping for new growth has to occupy a top search position for its niche. Fortunately the tools and techniques are readily available. If you know me and wondered where I had been, I spent the last year totally immersed in mastering Internet Marketing. By applying both the old and the new marketing methods, customers find me and ask for a sales call. Now that is different.

Having the right kind of website, a diligent use of back office tools, and the right someone to implement them is all that is required. I encourage you to call if you recognize the need.

Why A Small Business Must Use Internet Marketing

May 11th, 2010

Recently I was asked: With so much information given away for free in my blog, how do I make money. What I do is termed main street marketing. I offer all the services required by a small business to position them online in the top results of the search engines for their off line specialty. I help them capture their niche online.

What I divulge on this blog is only useful when applied as part of an overall comprehensive internet marketing campaign. All the information in the world, specific as it might be to your business situation, has no value without action to implement it. You could literally know all the methods and techniques but without understanding the subtleties of their application they could prove useless. Most of my time is spent directly coaching small businesses that desperately need to market their business online. The key to successfully migrating to an online presence is finding the right person who has a complete understanding of both the traditional and online marketing methods. Moving a business from the traditional forms, with very poor ways to track advertising spending, to online methods that track every mouse click, confirms knowing everything about a customer is an essential tool for prospecting, lead generation and conversion. Outsourcing this to the correct person is a smart business decision. Here is a link to one of my recent online articles comparing traditional and online methods. (Click Here)

Google AdWords 30 Day Results – What You Can Expect

May 10th, 2010

Here is a quick summary of the first 30 days activity using Google AdWords. The ads are down while we try a different method as a stand alone to further our experiment with online marketing methods. To recap this experiment for new readers:
The op-yop was a toy marketed during the 1960’s and had not been produced since. We found a considerable amount of new stock made in 1968 and decided to promote the toy again using various internet marketing methods, and then report the results here.

Following are the results of 30 days of AdWords activity
Three ads were rotated evenly during the 30 day period coming offline daily after they had spent the $5.00 a day ad budget.
Total Impressions 176,697
Total Clicks 220
Click through rate 0.12%
Average cost per click $0.42
Average cost per 1000 $0.53
Total cost $98.04
Successful keywords used were vintage toy, vintage toys, retro toys, op-yop
Total sales traceable to this activity $213.92 net after Paypal fees and shipping costs.

Sales activity did exceed the cost of procuring those sales. Improved ad copy could improve results. Since this marketing promotion is a work in progress, we will choose another method and report the results here. In addition to the actual orders we have had requests from resellers wanting to sell a reissued version of the toy. We also have been asked by two companies wanting to personalize editions of the toy for promoting their own businesses. The exposure the op-yop is receiving may make using other internet marketing methods more productive.

If you found this information helpful please sign up for free email updates and receive actual printouts of the google reports of this activity.

How To Read Google Adwords Results

April 25th, 2010

As returning readers know, we launched a product using internet marketing as it’s sole means of promotion as a trial by fire to prove internet marketing methods really do work. This quick look at the progress is for 2 complete days, April 23rd and 24th, 2010. Google provides a number of interesting ways to look at the results on an advertising campaign. Their summary page is what I am going to present here.

My initial budget was $150 for one month or $5.00 per day.
The activity summary for two days is:

20 clicks out of 19,283 times the ad was shown,

resulting in a (CTR) click through rate of 0.10%

at an average (CPC) cost per click of $0.60 each.

The (CPM) cost per 1000 ads shown is $0.62 for

total two-day cost of $11.96.

Quality Score is 7 out of 10, no too bad but could be improved.

This activity resulted in one sale totaling $8.00.

A study of the Stat-Counter.com metrics recorded 7 visits from this one buyers ip address before making a purchase. The purchase was from the Midwest, the core of the original 1968 sales area. The demographic is female age 27-45.
Traffic came from all over the globe, including Canada, Australia and Great Britain.

During this re-launching of the op-yop toy, (a former 2 million-unit seller), it has become obvious that anything can be sold via the Internet. What it requires, is combining the right product, with a marketing plan using all the various available methods.

The degree of success is determined partly by the commitment to follow up and follow through. Remember to promote, promote, promote.

Google Adwords Dismal For Product Launch

April 13th, 2010

It may be too early to determine absolutely, but the results from the Ad Words setup at Google has delivered dismal results. The last week of activity has a flat line graph showing no clicks, no percent served. There are volumes of help folders, you tube videos, and a self serving forum that provides indirect answers and a referral to their help pages running you around in a circle. One search question we asked was how to create an ad campaign using three ads, with the same keywords (a commonly recommended ad test). The result returned was referring to an A/B Test, but not how to set it up or execute one. I am intentionally NOT publishing the adwords we used, to avoid sending my readers chasing the ads and clicking on them without purchasing anything, which just runs up the google bill. The first day with one ad running, there were no clicks. The second day we received 4 clicks, Days 3 through 10 we received no clicks. Our quality score is now 7/10 also According to Google, not too bad. We have tried all the Google recommendations we can find to improve results, but nothing has worked. It appears as if our ad is parked somewhere. Google could take a lesson from us and make a process flow chart or checklist; no matter how large this check list would be, and time consuming the set-up might be, if it assured results it would be worth the effort (An Ad Words set-up checklist created by me and will be shared in the members section with subscribers.)

We are getting some site traffic, but not via google. Most from Yahoo as a result of the ezine article that was published. Many people who saw the ebay listing have also found the web site at http://www.op-yop.com. I congratulate them on finding it since the ebay listing did not contain a reference to the opyop site.
Overall, the google campaign does not seem suitable for do-it your-selfers. At this point, the only way to make google ads effective is for the op-yop name to go viral. (visit http:/www.opyop.com)
Facebook advertising is the next advertising campaign we will be investigating. Check back for our progress.

Ezine Article Chronicles Early Progress

April 9th, 2010

One of the effective and long lasting methods of getting traffic to your site is article marketing. As I had promised in my earlier blog, The Op-Yop Is Back I will do an update from time to time on the progress of the product launch. This time the update comes in the form of an article published online. One of the steps in generating traffic without paying Google for their help is submitting articles to the online article publishing sites. Part of the promotion of the op-yop, submitting an article, also happens to be a way of getting traffic back to this site. Check out my recently published article I submitted to ezinearticles.com: Do The Various Internet Marketing Techniques Really Work? It chronicles the steps I have taken so far in marketing and promoting the op-yop toy. After reading the linked article you will understand the steps taken to get to the current point in our Op-yop Launch progress. The article focuses on the “free tools” aspects of getting online. Because part of my consulting mission is to work with small businesses to establish their online identity and capture their off-line niche, online. And Free sounds real good to small business people. Hopefully, after reading several of my blog posts you will see how inter-related all the different methods of promoting are to each other and to gaining a successful foothold on line. This QuickTips blog promotes online marketing, one method is article marketing, which the linked article mentions the op-yop which links to the blog which has links to the www.op-yop.com site. Completing a full circle of links and back links takes time, but the exposure continues to grow with time. Read some of the comments received and you should notice they come from around the globe, from people who enjoy the free information. For my readers, there really is someone like you, hovering over the keyboard, awaiting the opportunity to become friends through the magic of email. One of the observations I want to pass along relates to working from home and getting rich overnight. My truth is that it hasn’t happened to me, but it can happen to you. By following the recommended steps and habitually going on line and following through, over time, traffic builds. Things start “clicking”. The money begins to come in from people who have grown to trust your advice. It is possible to build a business working from your home computer. It is simple…stick to the basics until you are well established, absorb how an overall marketing plan works, and have the discipline to follow through. Now spend some money. Seek out one of the people who have the tools you need and aren’t trying to sell you instant anything. Then invest some money in a proven, money back program. I receive email almost daily from many of the online giants. Each of them has tweaked a certain aspect of the daily routine to make a success of themselves. Their money comes from selling you their product and telling you how to do what they have done. That is how they make their money. You have to copy them and do the same thing. However, there are no guarantees. When you want the name of someone to follow and a link to their products, email me through the sign up form and I will share my favorite one with you. How To Easily Make An Internet Marketing Plan

April 4th, 2010

With all the marketing blogs giving free advice and the well written articles available at ezinearticles.com, (Click Here for A Sample) making a marketing plan is simple. Instead of requiring a stroke of genius, it’s more of a checklist of things to do. Complete a list of tasks and answer some basic questions. The most difficult part is the follow through and the follow up. Some critical thinking is needed to identify your target market. But the actual plan comes down to discipline and answering the 5 W’s and 2 H’s.

For a brief listing of the First Ten Steps visit one of my earlier blogs and then come back to this article for the critical thinking part.

I approach “target market” research using a disciplined problem solving method commonly used by problem solvers like engineers or technicians. This method is structured to answer seven questions; the answers bring clarity to each of the steps required to market a business online.

For identifying who will buy your product, answer the questions: who, what, when, where, why, how much, and how many. These are called the 5 w’s and 2 h’s. If you run through these questions for each of the steps you will arrive at a logical summary of things to do, steps to follow, and a resulting marketing plan.

For example, the marketing plan for the Op-Yop product naturally led to registering the domain names www.op-yop.com and www.opyop.com . Using Go-Daddy.com as the registrar was a choice based on a google search. The hosting on host www.hostgator.com was recommended by another marketer, and has proven very satisfactory. Making the one page website was simple to do using the free Composer tools in the Sea Monkey (Mozilla) suite of tools. I won’t go through all the steps and explain, but these examples should demonstrate my point.

Part of the follow through and follow up is an article like this one. The keywords used throughout are picked up by the search engines and eventually will link traffic to this site, as well as the op-yop site, where the opyop toy can be purchased.
